In New Zealand, citizens and permanent residents aged 16-19 are able to enrol at correspondence school in the 'young adult' category. Enrolment is free and students are entitled to a student allowance if they are aged 18 and their parents do not earn above a certain amount.
For the last few years the correspondence school has operated a summer school from December to February. This is intended to allow students to make up the last few credits if they are short of the requirements for NCEA or UE or their desired tertiary course. It is also an opportunity for students to get a head start or to try a new subject.
In 2018 we enrolled three year 12 (going into year 13) students in level 3 Physical Education at summer school and all four started the 2019 school year with 4 credits achieved with excellence in Achievement Standard 91501 "Demonstrate quality performance of a physical activity in an applied setting".
In 2018 one of our students who left school with NCEA Level 2 completed the requirements of both NCEA level 3 and university entrance at tekura (the new name for the correspondence school). In 2019 we have two students who left school with NCEA level two trying to do the same thing.
Enrolment at tekura is done online and takes about 20 minutes. You need your NSN (National Student Number).
