This achievement standard requires students to evaluate (in depth for achievement with merit, and critically for excellence) the effectiveness of a performance improvement programme. The evaluation is to be made using biophysical principles and socio-cultural factors. For a grade higher than achieved an evaluation should challenge assumptions/myths and suggest modifications that might increase the effectiveness of a programme.
Biophysical principles may include:
Socio-cultural factors may include:
There are three stages in the completion of this Achievement Standard.
1. Goal Setting and development of the PIP.
2. Execution of the PIP with athletes keeping a training log with comments. Testing will be required at the beginning of November and in the week before Xmas.
3. Write up of the draft report in the first half of January, submission of this for comment, then write up of the final report with this submitted for marking by the end of the first week of February 2019.
Summer school enrolments at correspondence school open at the beginning of December, with course materials available online from the week before Xmas.
The following pages contain an outline of the evaluation report.
You are not being assessed on what these goals are, but an improvement programme should improve somethings! Choose goals that can be measured e.g Improve my Bronco time by 20 seconds, Increase my 1RM Bench Press to 100kg, Improve my 40m sprint time by 0.2 seconds. Avoid goals that are difficult to measure or are not part of a pre-Xmas programme like ‘Improve my tactical awareness’, ‘Become mentally tougher’.
Your goals are likely to be in the areas of aerobic or endurance fitness, strength, speed, and maybe agility/flexibility. Think about the physical requirements of rugby league – a collision sport requiring bursts of high intensity running, the ability to make and break tackles, together with the strength and technique to win the wrestle.

You are not being assessed on this PIP, or even on whether you achieve your goals. You are being assessed on your evaluation of the PIP – what was good? What was bad? What was unexpected? How could it be better?
This section of your report shows that you had a PIP. It is a summary of your training log. You need to make it obvious to the marker that you understand the Principles of Training and the Methods of Training. Fill it in after each week.
Principles of Training
Have a think about the advantages and disadvantages of group vs individual training
The Intensity of Training is related to the Maximum Heart Rate MHR = 220 –age (MHR about 200 for you)
Aerobic Threshold – 70% of MHR 140 beats per minute, no aerobic gains below this
Anaerobic threshold – 85% of MHR (for sprint sessions)
Hard Training – mostly at 80% of MHR
Moderate Training – mostly at 70% of MHR
Light Training – mostly at 60% of MHR
